Artland Gallery’s new season opens with a bold exhibition of paintings, drawings, photographs, and objects by young Polish artist Michael Slusakowicz.‘Paradise Lost’ is a striking collection of images which challenge many everyday preconceptions concerning the loss of innocence; sexuality, violence, fear and desire. These works, which will provoke and inspire, are rich in content, as well as standing alone as powerful artistic images.
While Michael has shown before in pubs and clubs around Poland, this is his first solo exhibition. He came to England four years ago and initially studied Art and Design at Manchester College of Art and Technology (MANCAT), before going on to be Artist in Residence there. He is now studying at Camberwell College of Arts in London, but is delighted to be coming back to Manchester for the exhibition.
“Manchester is a great place with its own vibration, which is very different to London. Manchester is very open and welcoming… when I first arrived the people here really made it easy to get along with them. I see my future very much in England, there is a very progressive art scene here.”
“Showing at Artland is tremendously exciting. It’s a small gallery but I love the mood, it’s very inspiring. The building is 200 years old and the gallery is underneath the Friends Meeting House (Quakers), which means the place itself is a very interesting mix. It’s somewhere I feel I can express myself and this will make for a very atmospheric show.”
James Walmsley, Artland Director adds…
“The intelligence, sexuality, darkness, depth and terror of Michaels work has a gravitas not only to move, challenge, and disturb ….but also to question, explore and understand our capacity for brutality and the darkness that dwells in all of us.
In Michael's work I also see an outrage at an innocence and a love defiled….
for if love and trust are abused and lost, then what do we become…..and what do we become capable of?
He is exploring universal themes that reference Milton, where angels become devils and gods become flesh. This resonates in the global politics of the present. Morality is blurred.
The aggressor becomes the liberator and acts of opposition become acts of terrorism.
That which is beautiful can be forbidden and the depraved and unjust can become heroic. “
