School of Everything Meetup

/ 7:00PM - 9:00PM.
@ St Wilfrids Enterprise Centre
Free

The School of Everything is a one-stop information resource that makes learning more inspirational and ambitions achievable based on the premise that everyone has something to learn and everyone has something to teach.  School of Everything puts people who want to learn together with people who want to teach, how and when it suits them.

Teachers simply register online and create a personal page providing information on their lessons, the qualifications offered and the format in which they teach, for example workshops or one-to-one sessions.

Potential pupils find a tutor who's right for them, simply by searching for a subject, and location.  In just three simple steps - 1) contact a teacher, 2) arrange to meet and 3) begin learning - people can start to fulfil their ‘learning’ dreams.

“The School of Everything is an amazing online source for anyone wanting to learn something new, sharpen up their existing expertise or completely turn their lives around and reach for new horizons,” says Geoff Motley, a media trainer with a profile on the site.  “Exploring the School of Everything is a journey of discovery.  It takes and enhances the beauty of education; the ideas, the inspiration and the challenges just keep on coming”.

“Birmingham-based Tom Baker opens his house every Friday to teach people how to bake bread in his handmade oven.  In the heart of North London, Jonathan Cope reaches thousands with the healing effects of the didgeridoo.  Over in Muswell Hill, Diana Dumfries is transforming lives with her hula hoop school, while Keda Breeze is bringing out the best of all who sign up to her burlesque dance school in Bristol.  These are just a few of the thousands of teachers who have registered at School of Everything, a website that links teachers and learners all over the country and beyond”.

So far over 20,000 teachers and learners have registered, with traffic in August over 85,000 unique visitors.  The website was established to free people from the rigid framework of an academic institution, with support from the Young Foundation, the charitable trust which carries on the work of Michael Young, founder of Which Magazine and the Open University. School of Everything’s  investors include Esther Dyson, Tim Jackson, Sean Park, Rocco Pellegrinelli, JP Rangaswami, the Young Foundation and 4iP.

Since its launch a year ago it has won a New Statesman New Media Award, a UK Catalyst Award and were official honorees in the global Webby awards.

School of Everything is doing for education what YouTube has done for video sharing, or what eBay did for online auctioning; opening up a huge and fertile space between the professional and the amateur, a space where people teach what they know and learn what they don’t.
